A topical peptide studied for softening the appearance of expression lines. It is applied to the skin — never injected — and complements rather than replaces injectable neuromodulators. Results require continuous daily use over 8–12 weeks and fade within days of stopping.

Compound overview

What it is

SNAP-8 (Acetyl Glutamyl Heptapeptide-1, also listed as Acetyl Octapeptide-3, CAS 868844-74-0) is an elongated analogue of Argireline (Acetyl Hexapeptide-3). It mimics the N-terminal end of SNAP-25, a protein in the SNARE complex that docks synaptic vesicles at the neuromuscular junction. By competing for that position, it destabilises vesicle docking and reduces acetylcholine release, softening the repeated micro-contractions of facial muscles that etch expression lines into skin over time. The effect is local to where it is applied and depends on continuous use — it does not accumulate.

Change is gradual and appears over weeks rather than days. Fine expression lines — forehead, crow's feet — soften in appearance as the underlying micro-contractions reduce. Skin surface texture is unaffected by the mechanism itself. Because the compound acts only while present, the effect fades within days of discontinuing daily application.

Studied outcomes
  • The most-cited efficacy figure — approximately 35% reduction in wrinkle depth over 28 days — comes from manufacturer-funded studies (Lipotec, now Lubrizol) and should be read with that in mind
  • Independent, peer-reviewed evidence for SNAP-8 specifically is thin
  • The parent compound Argireline has published peer-reviewed evidence for topical antiwrinkle activity via the same SNARE mechanism
  • In vitro work supports competition with SNAP-25 in the SNARE complex and reduced neurotransmitter release
  • No published evidence supports equivalence to injectable neuromodulators

Suitability

Who it's for

  • Early or fine expression lines where the goal is softening the appearance rather than eliminating them
  • Clients who want a topical adjunct alongside — not instead of — injectable neuromodulators
  • Clients who prefer a non-injectable option and will apply it daily without interruption
  • Blending into an existing serum or cream within a longer skin protocol
Who should avoid it
  • Injection under any circumstances — this is a topical-only product
  • Deep static wrinkles that are present at rest — the mechanism addresses movement-driven lines
  • Anyone expecting immediate results — allow 8–12 weeks of continuous daily use
  • Broken, irritated, or actively inflamed skin
  • Application to the eye area

Dosing guidance

Protocol guidance

Dose
Reconstitute as supplied, then apply a small quantity to the target area once or twice daily
Frequency
Daily, without interruption — the effect depends on continuous use
Cycle length
8–12 weeks to assess; ongoing use is required to maintain the effect
Route
Topical only — apply to clean skin or blend into an existing serum or cream. Never inject.
Timing
Morning and/or evening on clean, dry skin, before heavier creams or oils

Safety

Contraindications & cautions

  • TOPICAL ONLY — this compound is never injected. It is the only non-injectable product in this catalogue, and everything around it is injectable. Confirm the route before use.
  • Patch test on a small area first and wait 24 hours before applying more broadly
  • Avoid the eye area, and avoid broken or irritated skin
  • If blending into a serum or cream, keep the mixture below 40°C — heat degrades the peptide
  • Store reconstituted material refrigerated and observe the supplied shelf life
  • The effect is not permanent and fades within days of stopping daily application
  • It does not replace injectable neuromodulators and should not be described or expected as equivalent to them
